2013 Nissan Sentra

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a second investigation into Nissan in May. The first covered inaccurate fuel gauges in the 2007 Quest minivan. The latest affects the Sentra and Versa from the 2013 and 2014 model years and the 2014 Versa Note, because of complaints of long brake pedal travel. If NHTSA finds a problem, it could affect an estimated 200,000 vehicles.

At the moment, this is still only a preliminary evaluation "to asses the scope, frequency and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect," according to the report, but it could lead to the full recall. NHTSA is still trying to find whether or not there are accidents, injuries or fatalities related to the problem. At this time, much of the data in the document is still marked Confidential or TBD. Nissan told Reuters in a statement that the company is working with the agency on the investigation and supplying the regulator with further information.

According to NHTSA, its Office of Defects Investigation has received eight complaints about long pedal travel in these models. They allege that the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor when pressed in some cases and doesn't sufficiently slow the vehicle. Autoblog has contacted Nissan for its reaction to the investigation. We will update this story when we receive a reply.

Volvo XC90

Volvo has officially kicked off the slow burn that will lead to the eventual unveiling of the next-generation XC90, in August. Its initial foray into the public eye will be with these, a series of 20 images of the new three-row SUVs interior, which is very, very Swedish (there are even the most adorable little Swedish flags on the seats).

In all, it looks like a positively sumptuous place to sit, with sharp looking woods and a crystal shifter, crafted by Orrefors Glassworks in Sweden. It's a clean, minimalist design that we imagine will age quite nicely.

Featured quite prominently - and the main part of the cabin that doesn't strike us as minimalist - is the very large touchscreen. Aligned in a portrait layout, which hasn't been done by too many automakers, it will be home to a new type of infotainment system that will make its debut in Volvo's flagship SUV. It also looks like we can expect digital gauges when the XC90 finally arrives.

Volvo has redesigned the seats with an increased eye not only on comfort, but (unsurprisingly) on safety. While we don't have full details on the safety changes quite yet, we do have some details on the ute's passenger-hauling abilities. The second row remains a three-abreast bench, but each seat can be individually reclined. Sounds darn handy when hauling kids, we think. As for that third row, which remains a difficult proposition in most SUVs and CUVs, Volvo is promising that passengers up to five feet, seven inches will find the back row comfortable. Ingress and egress should also be improved, as well. We'll put those claims to the test when we shoehorn six-foot, five-inch Senior Editor Miersma in the back during our initial drive of the next-gen XC90.

Volvo is really trying to stretch this reveal out. These interior images will be followed up in a few weeks by tech, chassis and powertrain details in mid July. The veil will finally be lifted on the exterior treatment by the end of August.

Caterham Seven and F1 cars

There's something about following in the footsteps of Colin Chapman that makes accomplished businessmen bite off more than they can chew. It happened to former Red Bull and Ferrari executive Dany Bahar, who just settled with Lotus having been fired for over-ambitiously misallocating funds during his tenure as CEO. And it appears to have happened to Tony Fernandes as well.

Fernandes is known in the transport business as the man responsible for Air Asia, a successful budget airline out of Malaysia, and to soccer fans for taking over the Queens Park Rangers FC. But in 2010 he got into cars, as well. He started the Caterham F1 team in 2010 (then racing under the Lotus banner) and bought Caterham Cars the following year, merging the two (alongside its applied technologies divisions) into the Caterham Group and subsequently dismissing its longtime CEO Ansar Ali.

Under Fernandes, Caterham embarked on an ambitious expansion plan that saw it broaden the Seven range, launch the SP/300.R track car with Lola, enter into a partnership with Renault to develop the new Alpine sports car and introduce the AeroSeven concept with production ambitions. Caterham even got into motorbikes (not unlike fellow Lotus racing offshoot Kodewa) and talked about building crossovers and city cars as well. But things haven't exactly been going according to plan. Caterham's partnership with Renault has dissolved, Lola went bankrupt, and the F1 team, now in its fifth season, has yet to score a single championship point, let alone a race win or podium finish.

It seems that it could all have been too much for Caterham and Fernandes to handle, as rumors surface that the latter is putting the former up for sale. According to reports emanating from the UK and Malaysia, Fernandes is seeking about half a billion dollars for the entire operation, including Caterham Cars, Caterham F1, Caterham Composites and Caterham Technology. We're awaiting confirmation from the company on the prospect of its sale, but we could hardly blame the company for falling short of the ambitions Fernandes held for it. Now it just seems a matter of whether the next Chapman-in-waiting can set more realistic goals.

Screencap from the trailer for On Any Sunday, the Next Chapter.

The tagline for the 1971 film On Any Sunday was "Motorcycle, Sport and the Men Who Ride On Any Sunday." Funded by Steve McQueen and directed by Bruce Brown - he also directed The Endless Summer and his son Dana Brown made Dust to Glory - the film dug into the world of professional and amateur motorcycle racing and was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary.

The next proper installment in the franchise is on the way, with On Any Sunday, the Next Chapter coming to theaters in the fall in 4K Ultra HD. The mission is the same as the 1971 movie, only the cast has changed, with racers like current MotoGP champion Marc Marquez and ex-AMA and GP champion Kenny Roberts, X Games gold medalist Ashley Fiolek, motocrosser Travis Pastrana and supercrosser James "Bubba" Stewart, plus Pikes Peak champion Carlin Dunne among the cast.

Screencap from video of a 3,082-hp dragster with a Bentley Continental GT bodyshell.

When it comes to street-legal cars there's "power," there's "Power" and then there's "PAHRRRRRR!" This Bentley Continental GT dragster built by Webster Engineering in Bedford, England owns that third category, with its 3,082-horsepower heartbeat erupting from a twin-turbo, 10.2-liter Chevrolet V8 crate motor built by Steve Morris Engines. An entrant in the Street Eliminator Class of last weekend's European Drag Racing Championship, it is fully road legal.

As you might expect, it's not exactly a factory-fresh Continental GT, more like an authentic Bentley bodyshell placed over a tube-frame chassis and a carbon-fiber-heavy interior that took eight months and 250,000 pounds ($420,763 US) to finish. It will be driven by its owner, Yorkshire watch repairer Steve Neimantas. Builder Jon Webster told Autoblog that they're hoping for times in the "mid to low sevens on street tires and 6's on slicks."

Volkswagen Passat

The schism that separates the European-market Volkswagen Passat and its American-built cousin is evidently only set to widen, as renderings have officially been released showing off the next-generation Euro-market Passat sedan, and it looks quite different than our larger, less costly family sedan. That's especially true up front, where it wears an aggressive scowl thanks to a chrome strip that forms a brow over the piercing headlamps and grille.

The new European model will make its world debut in July ahead of its auto show debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and we've already got a trio of sketches that give us a rough idea of the new four-door's design, as well as some images of the structure underpinning the Euro Passat. You can take a look at those up top. The big news, though, relates to the other info Volkswagen has released.

For a start, VW's vaunted German engineers have managed to trim 187 pounds of body fat form the next-gen model, thanks to the additional use of high-strength steel. Designers have also managed to provide a larger interior in a smaller footprint, although there isn't an explanation of how much smaller the new car actually is.

We do know about a pair of powertrains for our friends in Europe, including a new plug-in hybrid that should net 31 miles of range on battery power alone. It will be joined by VW's new 2.0-liter TDI engine, which will be paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive. 237 horsepower will be on offer with the diesel powerplant, and European buyers will have 369 pound-feet of torque available from just 1,750 rpm.

Optional goodies will include LED headlights (LED taillights are standard), a 12.3-inch TFT display in the instrument cluster, blind-spot monitoring, front assist with city emergency braking and a dynamic light assist system.

Expect more on the new Passat as its July debut approaches. Scroll up for the official sketches and photos, and scroll down for the official press release from Volkswagen.

Hockenheim 1970

There have only been about a dozen people who have won multiple Formula One World Championships. Thankfully the lion's share of them are still among us - names like Vettel, Alonso, Hakkinen, Lauda, Prost, Piquet, Fittipaldi and Stewart. Michael Schumacher is hanging on, but Senna, Fangio, Ascari and Graham Hill have all since departed this Earth. And we're bereaved to report that they'll have company as Jack Brabham has passed away.

The Australian driver started his career in midget racing and hillclimb events, working his way up to his F1 debut at the British Grand Prix in 1955. By 1958, after a few years in Formula 2, he was a permanent fixture on the F1 grid, winning the Monaco Grand Prix the next year en route to his first world title. He won a second with Cooper the following year, but after a fruitless 1961 he returned with his own team. In 1966 he won his third and final championship, putting him on equal footing in the history books with Lauda, Piquet, Senna and Stewart, but setting him apart by one notable metric: he was and remains still the only driver to win the championship in his own car.

Sir Jack won another handful of grands prix before retiring in 1970, selling his team (which went on to win another few championships with Denny Hulme and Nelson Piquet) initially to his collaborator Ron Tauranac, who in turn sold it to Bernie Ecclestone. Several of Jack's sons and grandsons have since gone on to race professionally. Jack Brabham died peacefully on Monday at his home on Australia's Gold Coast at the age of 88.

NASCAR Texas Auto Racing

For the average 18-year-old, school and work take up the majority of free time. In that respect, then, Chase Elliot is like pretty much any other 18-year-old. He graduated on Saturday, and then went to work. The only difference is, his work involves him flying around the country and driving a really loud car in circles.

Yes, Elliot, son of Winston Cup champion Bill Elliot, doesn't spend his free time working retail, but as a rookie driver in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Following his Saturday graduation from King's Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, GA, Elliot caught a flight to Iowa Speedway where he qualified sixth for the Get To Know Newton 250 (seriously NASCAR, these race names need to stop). He ended up finishing fourth, and currently sits at the top of the Nationwide Series leaderboards, two points ahead of NASCAR veteran Elliot Sadler, Regan Smith and Trevor Bayne.

Despite his young age, he even sounds pretty wise when asked about being free to focus on just racing.

"I think it is important to have a balance of what you do racing-wise and what you do during the week," Elliott told ESPN. "It seems like all the Cup guys are having kids right now, and they're all having them at about the same time. They all talk about that balance away from the race track, and I can understand where they're coming from."

Tesla Motors' showroom in Short Hills, New Jersey.

On the subject of Tesla Motors and its efforts to legally sell its electric vehicles directly to consumers without franchised dealerships, the FTC has taken aim at Missouri and New Jersey. The Commission hasn't made any nationwide decision on the subject quite yet, but in a May 16 statement it encouraged the two states to reconsider policies that would further prohibit automakers from selling directly to consumers. And the FTC didn't mince words, calling such laws an example of "protection that is likely harming both competition and consumers." This is much further than the FTC has ever gone before in support of direct vehicle sales.

FTC didn't mince words, saying such laws were "likely harming both competition and consumers."

The statement follows an April blog post from three FTC officials, who wrote that the anti-direct sales mandates were "protectionist" and "bad policy." Tesla has been doing battle with a number of states as well as lobbying efforts from the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), which represents 16,000 new car and truck dealerships representing about 32,000 domestic and international franchises. The NADA has been supporting dealers who oppose Tesla's direct sales for years.

In fact, Jonathan Collegio, vice president of public affairs for the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), maintained that the states need to retain the right to regulate the automobile sales distribution channel.

"These arguments ignore the fact that fierce competition between local dealers drives down prices both within and across brands. When three Ford dealers compete for the same customer, the customer wins, period," Collegio wrote in an e-mail to AutoblogGreen. ""Finally, it's a major fallacy to compare buying cars with buying other goods, like books or computers. New cars are major purchases that require licensing, insurance, complex financing involving trade-ins, contain hazardous materials, and if operated incorrectly can cause serious bodily injury."

Tesla representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from AutoblogGreen.

New Jersey and Missouri have both been in the news lately. Garden State politicos have created a bit of a grey area, first voting in mid-March to stop Tesla stores from selling cars starting April 1, then extending the deadline to April 15. Tesla appealed the ban with the state Superior Court last month, and the FTC says the " limited, selective set of exceptions" are "very likely anticompetitive and harmful to consumers." In Missouri, Tesla appears to be winning the on-the-ground fight, but if a proposed bill against direct sales there becomes law, it will "amplify the adverse effects of the current prohibition" and "discourage innovation," the FTC says.

Tony Cervone, Senior Vice President of Global Communications at GMVolkswagen may be one of the world's largest automakers, but its American arm is going through a serious rough patch. VW of America might cut back sales targets, and has an ongoing fiasco about where to build its CrossBlue crossover. Now, it's also losing Tony Cervone, its executive vice president of group communications, who is taking over as senior vice president of global communications at General Motors - effective immediately.

Cervone is an industry veteran in corporate communications with stints at United Airlines, Chrysler and 10 years previously at GM as leader of its European communications team and other positions. His new role will be to oversee the company's global communications, including all of its brands and products, and he will report directly to CEO Mary Barra. "I've worked with Tony in the past and he has my trust and respect. I know he'll be another catalyst for change on our leadership team," she said in the company's official announcement.

Volkswagen of America told Autoblog in an email that a permanent replacement for Cervone hasn't been named yet. Scott Vazin, vice president of brand communications, will take over his role in the interim.
