A massive early morning oil spill in Los Angeles has spewed some 10,000 gallons of black gold onto the city's streets. It happened in Northern LA's West Glendale, when a 20-inch pipeline burst and spattered oil on everything within in a half-mile radius.
A fire department spokesman tells USA Today that in some areas, the oil was knee deep. Four people were injured, complaining of respiratory distress and two people were hospitalized. As for the spill itself, the pipeline was shut off and local fire departments have managed to contain the spill. A haz-mat team and an environmental cleaning service were both on hand to help with the cleanup (shown above), with USA Today reporting that most of the oil has already been dealt with, although a total cleanup may not be finished until tomorrow.
Initial reports indicated that upwards of one million gallons had been spilled when the line burst, although those were dramatically revised down to 50,000 and eventually down to 10,000. It's wholly possible that we'll see a further revision as the day goes on. Take a look below for video from the scene of the spill.
